US city installs Bitcoin ATM at airport after crypto payment adoption

The city of Williston, North Dakota, continues to explore and embrace the cryptocurrency industry with the installation of a crypto automated teller machine (ATM) at its international airport.
The city administration officially announcement the installation of the âgovernment-hosted cryptocurrency kioskâ at Williston Basin International Airport, allowing passengers and non-travelers to buy and sell 40 digital currencies. The list of supported coins includes Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Dogecoin (DOGE), and Shiba Inu (SHIB).
For the initiative, the city of Williston partnered with crypto service Coin Cloud, which provided its digital currency machines (DCMs) to the city. According to the company, a DCM is âmore than just a Bitcoin ATM,â as it allows users to buy and sell not only Bitcoin, but 40 other digital assets in cash as well. “Old-school Bitcoin ATMs Can’t Do All This,” Coin Cloud affirmed.
Hercules Cummings, chief financial officer for the City of Williston, told Cointelegraph that the effort “may be the first case of a government-hosted crypto airport and ATM” in the United States. He also expects the city’s crypto payment volumes to increase, saying:
“By the fact that the government accepts cryptocurrencies for utility payments now coupled with the hosting of cryptocurrency ATMs, a government is a key player in providing public exposure and accelerating adoption of the cryptocurrency. “
The next step for the town of Williston would be to place a crypto ATM in Town Hall in the event of increased demand at the airport, the official noted. âAs part of our roadmap, we will eventually cross these payment corridors to licenses, permits and other fees within the city,â he added.
While the City of Williston advocates the adoption of crypto, its administration does not act as the custodian of the fund or handle crypto transactions. DCM operator, Coin Cloud, manages purchases and withdrawals.
The primary goal of DCM is to âbridge the gap between public curiosity and portfolio acceptance and adoption of a growing asset class,â Cummings said. âWe firmly believe that simple but important movements like this will achieve this goal. We want to continue to have a transformational impact and position ourselves as a key player in this technological initiative, âhe added.
