CORDON, Isabela: Police said on Friday an estimated 714,000 pesos was stolen from an ATM here through a tunnel. Major Fernando Mallillin, Cordon Police Station Chief, said the ATM was installed at the Producers Bank branch in Barangay Magsaysay in that town. “Four suspects dug a tunnel that served as a passage for the bank to retrieve cash from the ATM,” Mallillin said. He said the investigation revealed the suspects had made a hole between a house and a drainage channel and dug a tunnel from there to the shore. It also showed that the theft was discovered by the security guard when he opened and entered the bank and noticed a pit inside the manager’s office. Mallillin said the suspects may have targeted the manager’s office as an entrance to the bank and from there proceeded to where the ATM was set up. He said it was a bank clerk who immediately reported the theft to the police station staff here, who responded immediately. “The suspects planned the bank robbery because the way they did it went unnoticed until the suspects managed to take all the cash from the ATM,” Mallillin said. He said they were also studying CCTV footage of the incident at the bank and in the area to complete their investigation. “We have initially uncovered initial information regarding the identities of the culprits and further investigation is underway for the possible arrest of the suspects,” Mallillin said.
