Ellis said they were looking around. Not all organizations with resources that could help were in Deltona near these struggling families, Ellis said. “So even with everyone’s blessing, we were still having a hard time finding the right resources. And that’s when we realized that even though we’re the biggest city, in the county of Volusia, all of our resources are outside of Deltona,” Ellis said. In the last census, Deltona recorded about 95,000 people. By comparison, Daytona Beach had just under 75,000 people. the social infrastructure was never there. DELTONA, Florida —

Earlier this week, WESH 2 introduced you to several Orange County families experiencing homelessness.

One viewer, Terri Ellis, reached out after watching to say what she saw on TV that night, she saw everyday in her community.

“And so that touched me because, like I said, you know, we went through that,” said Ellis, vice president of the nonprofit Deltona Strong.

WESH 2’s Anika Hope traveled to Deltona to hear from Ellis who said Deltona families need more help.

Lately, the non-profit organization Deltona Strong has received constant calls about people on the verge of homelessness.

“We were contacted by law enforcement because they saw problems, that these people hadn’t done anything. They didn’t break the laws and want to take them to jail, but they really don’t know what to do,” he added. said Ellis.

Ellis said they were looking around. Not all organizations with resources that could help were in Deltona near these struggling families, Ellis said.

“So even with everyone’s blessing, we were still having a hard time finding the right resources. And that’s when we realized that even though we’re the biggest city, in the county of Volusia, all of our resources are outside of Deltone,” Ellis said.

At the last census, Deltona had about 95,000 people. By comparison, Daytona Beach had just under 75,000.

“Deltona kind of grew up in silence. It kind of grew up in silence, so to speak. It was originally supposed to be a dormitory community full of retirees. So the infrastructure, which means the social infrastructure didn’t never been there. OK, it was ‘I didn’t anticipate we would need it,” said Dana McCool, Deltona City Commissioner for District 4.

McCool said every week they hear from families who are in desperate need of support.

“And you know, you don’t have the gas or the energy, you know, to call and call and go here and run to Daytona Beach and run to DeLand, and run to DeBary. You know, it’s crazy, McCool said.

Ellis and McCool say what makes sense, and studies show it works, is a coordinated care center where people can get help from multiple organizations in one place.

“What can we do to be proactive? What will allow you to avoid homelessness? Is it a conversation with a career source? Does this speak to Daytona State College? McCool said.

They want a permanent place in Deltona, but until then they plan to hold Deltona Community Service Day at the Deltona Center on August 6th.

“It’s the start. It’s the start of a conversation about ‘what do we see in Deltona? What do we need in Deltona?'” Ellis said.

And that’s the beginning of the answer, ‘how can they help?’

Deltona Community Service Day will be held Saturday, August 6 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Deltona Center, located at 1640 Dr. MLK Blvd.
