KOLHAPUR: An elaborate plan to rob an automated teller machine (ATM) with the help of an excavator in a village in Sangli failed after the vehicle got stuck in a trench on Saturday night.
The full sequence of events was captured by CCTV camera and released by Sangli Police.
According to the investigation, police attached to Miraj Gramin police station said the suspects first stole the shovel parked in front of a petrol pump using duplicate keys. They then drove the vehicle to the village of Arag, where a private bank had opened an ATM center a few months ago. They then broke down the center door and uprooted the ATM case.
Inspector Chandrakant Bidre of Miraj Gramin Police Station told TOI, “After pulling out the ATM box from the center, the excavator got stuck in a trench. trench. The thieves attempted to smash the casing but failed. They left the vehicle and ATM casing behind and fled.”
He added that they suspected the involvement of two to three people in the attempted robbery. Bidre said bank staff were called and the ATM box opened. An amount of Rs 27 lakh in cash was found inside.
“The thieves may have been aware of the huge amount of money available in the machine. They may also have known that the money was replenished on Saturday. We have registered a complaint against unknown persons,” Bidre said.
