Artistic Imposition in the Photographic Portrait

Susan Sontag claimed that photographs "owe their existence to a loose cooperation (quasi-magical, quasi-accidental) between photographer and subject." Any photographic portrait marks an encounter between the person executing the image and the person posing for it. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.
When a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dali and Phillipe Halsman; Frida Khalo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo; and Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams. In other cases the photographer intentionally frames the photographic subject alongside the artist's own work of art so that they become compelling participants in their own painted or sculptural compositions. This exhibition invites viewers to consider how the difficult task of representing another artist is productively accomplished through the collaborative aesthetic resonances discernable between model and photographer in these portraits. |

Pop-Up Business Program Developed by the City of Ypsilanti, the Downtown Development Authority of Ypsilanti, and the MI Small Business Development CenterKick-Off and Orientations scheduled for October 6, 6-7:30 pm at B-24’s and October 7, 9-10:30am at SPARK East.Pop-Up businesses are generally retail stores, galleries, or offices that temporarily activate a vacant or under-utilized space. They are used to create low-cost, low-risk opportunities to transform a place quickly for a limited amount of time. Teresa Gillotti, Ypsilanti’s Planning Director, explains, “Filling vacant spaces with active uses is a goal. Trying out a new business idea or market is a great way to do that even if it’s just for a few months. Sometimes that’s all the time you need to find out if the business, or the space works. Anderson Paint, Ann Arbor Carpets, Delux Drapery, Top of the Lamp and Tribble Painting are accepting entries through July 31. Participant Rules and Regulations: Only one grand prize to be awarded. All entries must be received by July 31, 2014. The winner’s name will be drawn August 25, 2014. Winners name will be posted by August 29, 2014. Anderson Paint will supply Benjamin Moore Aura paint and related items, not to exceed $750 in retail value. Tribble Painting will supply labor to completely paint one room not exceeding 32 hours. Historical Practices and Contemporary Native Art

Many of today’s Native artists draw on historical tribal practices for their contemporary art making. In this Conversation, U-M PhD candidate Kristine Ronan will highlight the intersection between the historical and the contemporary in an array of objects from the touring exhibition Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3. Comparing objects from the exhibition to some of UMMA’s permanent collections, we will especially consider how relating the past to the present might serve as political commentary for a number of today’s Native artists.

Robert's Paintings (2011, Canada, 52 min) directed by visual artist and filmmaker Shelley Niro, examines the life and career of artist, curator, educator and cultural theorist Robert Houle. Niro’s beautiful and compelling documentary paints an intimate portrait of this hugely influential and important artist, widely recognized for his role in the recovery and re-contextualization of Canadian Indigenous heritage through art. The film's director Shelley Niro is a Mohawk member of the Six Nations of the Grand River and belongs to the Turtle Clan. Her work is also featured in the UMMA exhibition of Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3. Guided Tour: Design + Architecture

UMMA has assembled a choice group of domestic design objects in a new dedicated Design Gallery. Both design aficionados and novices will recognize some of the historic work on view. UMMA docents will introduce this exciting new installation to visitors along with one of a series of three exhibitions showcasing Michigan architects, Three Michigan Architects. On March 30, visitors will see Part 1 - David Osler. Ann Arbor native and U-M alum David Osler's domestic, institutional, commercial, and civic buildings represent some of the most distinctive and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. On April 20, visitors will explore Part 2 - Robert Metalf. Metcalf designed houses and businesses for many of Detroit and Ann Arbor's most prominent citizens. His work is known for his careful attention to detail and for siting to maximize the light and view.

Family Art Studio: Changing Hands

Create your own art project inspired by the exhibition of contemporary Native American artists in Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3. Designed for families with children ages 6-12 to experience art together, UMMA docents will lead families on an exploration of the exhibition followed by a hands-on workshop. This workshop is offered in partnership with the Ann Arbor Art Center. Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation, 3: Contemporary Native Art from the Northeast and Southeast is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition catalogue is made possible in part with the support of the Smithsonian Institution’s Indigenous Contemporary Arts Program. Lead support for UMMA's installation is provided by the University of Michigan Health System, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Native American Studies Program, and the Doris Sloan Memorial Fund. A Second session for this event will be offered from 2 pm - 4 pm |

A folk legend and a unique local resource Josh White Jr. describes himself as a secular, folk/blues, pop, jazz vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, actor, adult and children's concert performer and recording artist, teacher, and social activist. He carries forward the musical legacy of his father, who brought a taste of the blues to New York's folk scene and then to the whole world in the 1930s and 1940s. Josh Jr. grew up performing on stage with his father, and he can take you back to personal encounters with the likes of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Bojangles, Leadbelly, Joe Louis, Woody Guthrie, Billie Holiday, Pete Seeger, Dorothy Gish, Burl Ives, Odetta, Miriam Makeba, and Nina Simone. He has continued to record music ranging from folk to country to kids' music, and his most latest, "Tuning for the Blues," delved into some classics of the blues genre. The non-profit Scrap Box Second Annual Warehouse sale is scheduled for Saturday, June 14 from 9am to 2pm at our Ann Arbor warehouse. It is both a sale and fundraiser for the Scrap Box.
“The Scrap Box is a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization whose mission is to promote creativity and sustainability by providing inexpensive recycled materials and teaching eco-friendly ways to recycle”. The Warehouse Sale is aimed more at adult artists, makers and crafters, though children are welcome! |

Yep. You read that right! He will be IN-STORE! Not at a huge auditorium or an oversized events hall. He will be right downtown in our store at 124 E. Washington! We can't tell you how excited we are for this event.
Since this will be the biggest event of the year for our bookstore, we wanted to send you, our loyal customers, the announcement first. Here are some details:
- Since we are hosting David in our store (not off-site) -- space is limited for the reading portion of the event. This will be a one-of-a-kind, intimate reading. That said, not everyone will get to attend the reading, BUT EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO MEET DAVID CAN. After the reading, there will be a separate signing line where David will sign his books.
- Though tickets to the reading itself are limited, we’ll also have a general signing line open to the public, after the reading, no purchase necessary. David will be happy to meet with and sign for everyone who comes out. So even if you don't get tickets to the reading, you can meet David!
More details to follow. We can't wait to see you there!

Storytime at the Museum

Student docents and UMMA staff will bring art to life as they read stories related to the art on display and invite responses from our youngest patrons.
